  • 1701 - Today in history, Anders Celsius was born in Sweden. He was the inventor of the Celsius thermometer. 
  • 1779 - The College of Pennsylvania became the University of Pennsylvania. It was the first legally recognized university in America. 
  • 1870 - On this day in history, The NY Times dubbed baseball "The National Game."
  • 1895 -  Alfred Nobel established the Nobel Prize
  • 1910 - Today in history, New York's Pennsylvania Station opened.
  • 1924 - In New York City, the first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was held.
  • 1973 - On this day in history, Gerald Ford was confirmed by the Senate to become vice president, succeeding Spiro Agnew.
  • 1978 - San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and City Supervisor Harvey Milk, a gay-rights activist, were shot to death inside City Hall by Dan White, a former supervisor.
